When "just relax" makes it worse: what to say instead

The Lunah Theory · 27 September 2026 · 6 min read

"Just relax" might be the most well-meaning, most counterproductive thing you can say to someone going through menopause. It's meant to help. It almost never does. Here's why — and what to say instead.

Why "just relax" backfires

When her body is running hot, her sleep is shattered, and her mood is on a hormonal rollercoaster, 'relax' isn't an instruction she can follow. It feels like being told to stop a wave with your hands. What she hears is: 'You're making this harder than it needs to be.'

She isn't. And the fastest way to make it worse is to make her feel like she is.

What to say instead

  • "I can see this is hard. I'm here."
  • "You don't have to explain it to me. I believe you."
  • "What would help right now — even a little?"
  • "Nothing? That's okay too. I'll just be here."
The most powerful thing you can do isn't to fix it. It's to stop trying to fix it, and just be on her side.

This is the heart of In Her Corner — not advice, but presence. Being the steady one when everything else feels unsteady.
