How to set up a cooler bedroom for menopausal sleep

The Lunah Theory · 18 October 2026 · 6 min read

When your body's thermostat is running hot, the bedroom becomes the most important room in the house. A few small changes to how you set it up can be the difference between a restless, sweaty night and a genuinely restful one.

You don't need to renovate. You need to layer, ventilate, and think ahead.

Start with the bed

  • Swap heavy doonas for breathable layers you can add or remove.
  • Choose cotton or bamboo sheets — they breathe better than synthetics.
  • Keep a spare top sheet folded at the foot of the bed for hot moments.

Airflow and temperature

Aim for a room temperature of 16–18°C. If you can't cool the whole room, a small fan aimed across the bed (not directly at you) keeps air moving without drying you out. A bowl of ice in front of the fan is an old trick that genuinely works.

If night sweats are frequent, keep a damp face washer and a glass of cool water by the bed. The act of cooling your wrists and neck can bring your temperature down fast.

The goal isn't a cold room. It's a room that lets your body do what it's trying to do — cool down and settle.

These are the same principles behind the Sleep Reset's bedroom setup checklist. Small changes, big difference.
